Former owner tells Autocar that the rights for TVR parts and designs have been sold back to UK interests, sparking rumours of a comeback

Rights to make TVR cars and components, to use existing designs and manufacture components for existing cars, have been recently sold back to British interests located near London, according to their former owner, the Russian banker Nikolai Smolenski, now living in Vienna.

Speaking exclusively to Autocar earlier today, Smolenski said the deal was done “some weeks ago” but refused to reveal the price. The transaction is understood to involve a company fronted by a Mr Les Edgar, a Surrey-based entrepreneur.

In other intriguing moves, a private company called TVR Motor Cars Ltd was incorporated at the end of April and is currently described by Companies House as “active”. The same source reveals Leslie Edgar, of Dorking, as director of both TVR Manufacturing Ltd and TVR Automotive Ltd. Meanwhile TVR's website has for some time carried the comments “never say never” and "roaring back". TVR enthusiasts are convinced “something is up”.

Smolenski acquired TVR in 2004 from its previous long-time owner, Peter Wheeler, for a rumoured price of £15 million. He operated it with difficulty and announced that after several false starts, including building a new Cerbera in Austria powered by a BMW diesel, he had given up the idea of making sports cars and would use the famous three initials in a company he owned, manufacturing wind turbines.

Anyone with any petrol in their blood must want to see TVR back making extreme cars again. Lets hope there is something in these rumours.

(If we can start a wish list, can i have a Cerbera with a small block Chevy V8 for less than a F Type please?)

I wonder if the Les Edgar mentioned is the video games guy who co-founded Bullfrog and is now amongst other things a consultant at Stainless Games, who make Carmageddon? I know there are some TVR fans at Stainless. It would bring a different meaning to petrol in their blood!

I heard that the tooling and molds for the old TVR's (by which I mean the Sagaris, T350 etc) have been destroyed, meaning that any new TVR would have to be brand new.  Not sure if this is the truth.

they make them better than in the past.  As an unfortunate owner of a new Tuscan in 2000,  it was the most miserable ownership experience I've ever had with a car.  A truly shocking piece of engineering....in the 9 months I owned it,  it was only working for 2 of them, albeit with bits falling/rattling off.  No tears for their demise here!  Half baked pile of rubbish (at the time),  with little research and development....saw Smolensky coming...£15m!  best deal in automobile history,  shame Mr Wheeler never lived long enough to enjoy the money. Without his marketing genius,  the new owner never stood a chance.

Sorry to hear about your poor ownership experience, nick644uk66. I'm no TVR apologist - they did make some pretty under-engineered cars in their time - but they weren't all bad. My family owned two TVRs (Taimar, 350i) and both were reliable and fun in equal measure. But that was 25 years ago. It seems the more recent models (Cerbera onwards) did suffer as the technology began to overwhelm TVR's ability to tame it. They seemed to lose the plot a bit and, well, you know how the story ended... Personally, I'd prefer that TVR be left to rest in peace but if someone thinks differently then fair play to them. Good luck because if the rumours are correct then I fear they'll probably need a lot of it. TVR's brand image took a massive kicking following the closure. Surely it would be easier to start afresh with no baggage - a curious decision I'd say.

Nick, thats awful. In 2001 i bought a new Cerbera, and (with one or very minor issues) had 3 great years doing 18,000 miles in it. I am sure its no consolation to know you were unlucky, but as someone who had a good one, i can say when they worked they were amazing machines.

yeah every company will have a few lemon cars come out of production, but I suppose it comes down to how good the aftersales service is .   There should be expected downtime and money for keeping this car going but the above story does sound a rather bit unlucky.

Get BMW on the case to supply outgoing Straight sixes and you have a really good forumula for a TVR return.   Mind you if its a true british buyer I can imagine the company certificate will go on the wall along with their stamp collection and trainspotting memrobilla.
