Yes, it’s a marketing stunt - but an airborne meeting between the Aston Martin Vulcan supercar and the last flying Avro Vulcan bomber is never going to happen again.
As Vulcan XH558 prepares for its last ever flight – which is due to take place this month – the iconic aircraft has performed a special fly-past at Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire, where Aston Martin’s 800bhp Vulcan was parked up and waiting.
The resulting pictures and video are sensational, of course, but they also represent something more. It’s a meeting of old and new technologies – with the Vulcan’s Rolls-Royce Olympus jet engines providing a stark contrast to the Aston Martin’s 7.0-litre V12.
Ironically, the £1.8 million Aston Martin is also cheaper than the initial purchase price of the Vulcan - which cost just £750,000 when it was launched in 1956. Given the choice, which one would you take home?
