Former rally driver and motorsport boss Ove Andersson has been killed in a rally crash in South Africa.

The 70 year-old Swede died while competing in the historic Milligan Vintage Trial near Oudtshoorn in South Africa.

Reports say that the car he was driving, a 1957 Volvo P444, was involved in a collision with a minibus taxi. His co-driver, and the car’s owner, Tubby Bennett was injured in the crash.

Andersson’s rally career included many significant victories, including winning the 1975 Safari Rally in a Peugeot 504. He also won the 1971 Monte Carlo Rally.

After retiring from front-line driving, Andersson enjoyed success as boss of Toyota Team Europe, looking after the company’s rallying and Le Mans programmes.

He later went on to lead the Toyota F1 team for its first season, and after his retirement worked as a motorsport consultant.
