Punishment includes exemplary damages for the first time

Almost 60 insurance fraudsters have been ordered to pay just shy of £300,000 in compensation.

The fraudsters created accidents in order to claim insurance money between 2005 and 2006, with people who agreed to take part in the incidents given a script and instructions about how to deal with the insurers.

All 30 of the traced accidents took place around three locations in Greater Manchester and were mostly caused by sudden braking before roundabouts and junctions.

Insurers started to realise a pattern in the claims, as each had the same mobile number given to the victim and many forms were filled in with the same handwriting.

The fine includes £92,000 of exemplary damages.
