Fisker will use BMW's turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines from 2012/13

Fisker Automotive has signed a deal with BMW that will see the German firm supply the hybrid specialist with up to 100,000 turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines per year from 2012/13, as well as other components.

The engines will be used to power Fisker’s upcoming ‘Project Nina’ four-door model, which, ironically, is being billed as a rival to BMW’s own 3-series. It will go into production in late 2012 and will have its BMW-supplied engine range-extended by hybrid components.

Three body styles of Project Nina will be offered – saloon, convertible and shooting-brake – and it will cost from around $50,000 in the US. Unlike Fisker’s only current model, the Mercedes-CLS-sized Karma, the new model will be offered in right-hand drive.

Fisker, which recently opened a European office near BMW’s headquarters in Munich, will build its future model at GM’s re-commissioned Delaware plant.

CEO and executive design director Henrik Fisker said: “The BMW engine was an obvious choice for us, as BMW is known for producing the best and most fuel efficient gasoline engines in the world. We are very pleased to have signed this agreement with BMW.”
