BMW sales chief says the 'mini' Mini could be made - and the Rocketman concept hints at future Minis

BMW’s sales and marketing boss Ian Robertson has given clear indications that the Mini Rocketman could make production and gives hints towards other future Minis.

“We are good at looking at history and interpreting a future for it,” he told Autocar, and pointed out that most Mini concept cars do eventually end up in the showroom.

All future Mini models could be influenced by the Rocketman concept, according to Robertson. “The themes in the car are not just about a smaller Mini,” he said. “Lightweight construction, and new types of components will go on to Minis. The BMW i-concept [lightweight and alternative energy] will be available to all members of the group.”

The Rocketman concept is also believed to preview design cues for the next generation of Minis, including the new Coupé and Convertible, expected to arrive in 2013 and built upon the BMW Group’s new front-drive platform.

Robertson, though, stressed that a production Rocketman and the current Countryman five-door Mini would not threaten the traditional three-door car. “The core of the Mini brand is always going to be the Mini three door and Convertible,” he said.
