Prius-based estate and MPV planned for launch in spring 2011

Toyota will continue its plans to greatly expand its range of hybrids with a Prius-based estate and MPV in spring 2011, using the nickel hydride battery launched in the CT200h.

These will be followed up by a sporty Prius coupe, which will rival the Honda CR-Z and was previewed by the FT-CH Detroit motor show concept.

Toyota USA boss Jim Lentz said at Detroit that the firm was keen to develop a Prius family and to make better use of the Prius brand.

Toyota’s 1.8-litre VVT-i hybrid system will soon become the firm’s core powertrain as the firm aims to sell more than one million hybrid units globally by the early part of this decade

It’s also rumoured that the firm will launch its first hybrid sports car, a rear-drive plug-in based on the next-gen Lexus IS platform. It will be badged as a Toyota.

Toyota wants to add hybrid variants to all of its models, so the next RAV4 will be available with petrol-electric power, too.

It’s due in spring 2012, but only the five-door RAV4 will get the hybrid option.

"only the five-door RAV4 will get the hybrid option"

I wonder whether that's because the three-door has been discontinued ages ago.
