Radical’s new electric sports car will be put through a gruelling 16,000-mile endurance trip from Argentina to Alaska later this year.
The Radical SRZero, the firm’s first electric car, has a claimed range of more than 340 miles, with power coming from two 550V electric motors which produce the equivalent of around 400bhp between them.
The Peterborough-based firm has developed Imperial College London’s Racing Green Endurance team (RGE) and has been revealed at today’s Autosport International show in Birmingham.
The SRZero’s twin electric motors are powered by the latest lithium iron phosphate batteries, which are linked to a state-of-the-art battery management and control system. The range is boosted by the inclusion of a regenerative braking system.
The car will travel the full length of the Pan-American Highway, from Argentina’s Ushuaia, the world’s most southerly city, to Prudhoe Bay in the far north of Alaska.
Despite the addition of the electric propulsion system, the SRZero can still manage 0-60mph in just 3.5sec and go on to reach a top speed of 118mph when in high-performance mode.
“The SRZero is Radical’s most advanced project to date,” said Mick Hyde, co-founder of Radical Sportscars. “This car takes Radical’s design in a new direction, tackling the issue of climate change head on but still providing the same driving thrills as any other Radical.
