Autocar has learned that there is a ‘good chance’ that the forthcoming all-electric Mini E will be offered to British customers.
According to Mini UK’s boss, Andy Hearn, the bulk of the 500 electric Minis that the company intends to produce will be sold in America, but there are also plans to introduce the car to other major cities, possibly including London.
The Mini E makes its official debut at next month’s LA show. It is powered by a lithium-ion battery and is capable of hitting 62mph from rest in just 8.5 seconds. BMW insiders claim that it has a ‘real world’ range of around 100 miles, and can be fully recharged in just two and a half hours using a specially-adapted domestic power socket.
BMW is planning to lease rather than sell the Mini E to customers, with cars being used to provide feedback to BMW to help with the development of future electric cars.
