Kia has revealed a new green version of its Cee’d hatchback at the Madrid motor show. The eco_cee’d uses stop-start technology and is claimed to put out just 104 g/km of CO2.The eco_cee’d is officially a concept car, but something very similar will be in the showrooms by the end of the year. It uses a version of Kia’s 1.6 litre CRDi diesel engine tuned for greater economy and is claimed to be capable of delivering 72.4 mpg on the European combined cycle, a substantial improvement on the standard diesel Cee’d’s already impressive 60.1 mpg.The eco_ceed also gets a six-speed gearbox in place of the current car’s five-speed unit, improved aerodynamics and low-resistance tyres in addition to the automatic start-stop system. If Kia can achieve similar economy and CO2 figures with a production version of the car it will undercut the Ford Focus ECOnetic and Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion.
