Americans promise to break speed record this month

The American SSC Ultimate Aero TT is a long way from being the prettiest or most luxurious supercar on the planet, but if things go to plan, by the end of August it could be the fastest.

SSC has announced that it will have finished speed testing for the title "World's Fastest Production Car" by the end of the month.

The top-speed runs will take place in Washington State, and will be validated by Guinness World Records. A 12-mile section of public highway is being closed for the runs.

SSC made its first attempts on the production car speed record in March, but it was thwarted by bad weather. Even so, they got very close, and all apparently without using full throttle.

The current speed record holder is a Koenigsegg, which hit 242mph – the Bugatti Veyron has yet to be officially tested by Guiness World Records.

The Ultimate Aero TT uses a twin-turbo V8 that backs 1183bhp and 1094lb ft. It'll do 0-60mph in a claimed 2.8sec, and in theory will top out at 273mph. To find out what it's like at the wheel, read our first drive here.
