BBC investigation to expose ineffectiveness of speed cameras

A BBC radio programme will tonight reveal that more than half of speeding drivers caught by speed camera in London get away without any kind of prosecution at all. The Investigation, due to be aired tonight at 8.00pm on BBC Radio 4, will claim that hundreds of thousands of drivers are effectively being let off speeding. Its figures, supplied by Safety Camera Partnerships countrywide, reveal that around half a million motorists are caught on camera in the capital every year. Since the DVLA's registration database only features properly registered UK cars, only two thirds of those motorists are sent notices of intended prosecution, and only 48 per cent end up getting points on their licences and a fine. The prosecution rates are better in less densely populated areas of the country, the programme will explain. However, it will also quote top traffic cop Meredydd Hughes explaining that he's happy with the speed camera prosecution rate, as it's higher than the national average detection rate for any UK crime, which currently stands at 30 per cent.
