Trials of the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive started in December 2007, with universities, councils and energy companies all taking part.

Smart claim the Fortwo Electric Drive’s 30kw motor can power it to 30mph in 6.5secs and its economy is equivalent to 300mpg.

Smart also confirmed that the second generation Fortwo Electric Drive was to undergo similar trials, and the car should feature improved performance and range and a shorter charge time.
