Hummer's proposed new owner, Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery, has confirmed it wants to develop a green model.

Yang Yi, the firm's general manager, confirmed that the takeover should be complete by October, and said a fuel-efficient vehicle woudl be a priority.

"We want to make a green Hummer," said Yi. "We think the Hummer has huge potential in emerging markets.

"Tengzhong and Hummer are very aware of the government's fuel-efficiency requirements. Hummer has already achieved substantial progress in this area."

He also confirmed that the current Hummer management team would be kept on to oversee the new company, and that the dealer network would be untouched.

Yi declined to comment on rumours that Sichuan was paying $100 million (£61 million) for Hummer, but did confirm that the company wouldn't take on any of Hummer's debt.
