Mercedes is planning to sell cars with a drag coefficient of less than 0.20 within the next five years.

With pressure to build greener cars, manufacturers are again focusing on aerodynamics to save fuel and Mercedes believes there is still a lot more to learn.

The German car maker has just launched the E-class coupe, the world’s most aerodynamic car, which has a Cd figure of 0.24.

Today project manager for the car, Rainer Tiefenbacher, said: “There is still plenty more to come as we explore ways of improving fuel efficiency. Designers are still learning about what works aerodynamically and are having to consider it more and more when they think about how a car will look.

“There are big steps to be made, especially around and under the engine hood. Twenty years ago we celebrated a 0.30 Cd, in five years we will reach the next big step.”

The E-class coupe is scheduled to go on sale in June.
