Mini Cooper review
Mini Cooper 1.6 16v Road Test
Test date 23 May 2001
Price as tested £12,395
Widely accepted as the most important car of the 20th century, the original Mini became the template for most modern cars. Issigonis’s vision of utilitarian transport arrived in 1959 complete with transverse engine, front-wheel-drive and rubber suspension. Over the next 40 years it went through many transformations, capped, most famously, by the immortal Cooper and Cooper S. Best was probably the 78bhp 1275cc Mk 1 Cooper S, while the Clubman was the least desirable.
