Honda CRZ hybrid in detail

Matt Saunders
“We believe the time is over to think about ‘hot hatchbacks’.” Those are the sentiments of project leading engineer Norio Tomobe, one of the key men responsible for the development of the Honda CRZ. “The world is changing, and we should take care to make cars that are both fun to drive and low on emissions.”

That’s the philosophy behind this compact, enthusiast-targeted hybrid: it’s an eco-car, but not such a worthy one.

Using the same IMA hybrid system as the current Insight hybrid, Honda mated it to a larger four-cylinder petrol engine than the Insight uses: the 112bhp 1.5-litre engine fitted to the Japanese market Jazz, to be precise. Together with the electric assist system, this tandem powertrain develops 120bhp and 128lb ft of torque. But it’s the ‘ready-at-any-revs’ nature of that torque, which comes mostly from the electric motor, that makes the CRZ feel so responsive – or so Tomobe claims.

And that’s not all Honda has done to make its new hybrid more of a driver’s car. Firstly, it’s a manual, not a CVT. “The driver gets a much more direct feeling of boost from the electric motor,” Tomobe says, “and at certain points in the operating range, the manual gearbox even makes the car more efficient.”

Second, Honda moved the car’s 38kg Nickel Metal Hydride battery back, which is mounted in its boot, further forwards within its wheelbase, for a better weight distribution.

Third, they designed in wide tracks and a low centre of gravity: the CRZ’s centre of roll is 15mm lower even than that of a Civic Type R.

And fourth, they overhauled the chassis. The CRZ has forged aluminium wishbones front and rear, which save it 16kg of unsprung mass relative to an Insight, as well as 16in alloy wheels that are 5kg lighter per corner.

Could they have done more? “We wanted to be careful to make the car both efficient and fun,” says Tomobe, “and I think we have arrived at the right compromise. For a long time, we planned to use the same 1.3-litre powertrain as the Insight, but I succeeded in convincing the management eventually that we could use something more sporty.”

“It’s true that we could work the hybrid assist system harder,” he goes on. “At the moment it’s supplying 13bhp and 60lb ft, but only using about 50 per cent of the capacity of our batteries. We could increase that assistance, but we would need to provide more cooling for the batteries, and we would also shorten the battery pack’s operational life. In our view, that’s too big a price to pay.”

And we’ll have found out by this time next week exactly how much fun it’s possible to have at the wheel of a hybrid; our man in Japan, Peter Lyon, is driving the car on Wednesday. Having had a closer look at the car, I’m actually quite excited to find out.

It seems like aftermarket tuning could be about gaining power from the batteries at the expense of lifetime.

sounds expensive.

lotusfan March 5, 2010 7:53 PM

Yes, i was thinking the same. If it is meant to be a 'spoty' car, then i wonder how much ragging that electric motor could put up with?

Thats probably why Mugen arent offering a performance engine upgrade.

Definitely not buying a 2nd hand hybrid!

"Thats probably why Mugen arent offering a performance engine upgrade." Rumour has it that they will.

I'm actually more excited about this again - they seem to have done some decent work on the chassis - let's hope they've got the spring and damper rates sorted so it rides better than the Insight, Jazz and Civic.

13bhp, despite 60lb of torque, also sounds a little low - a turbo would traditionally add more power than that and surely this is what the hybrid powertrain is trying to mimic in some ways?

"The CRZ has forged aluminium wishbones front and rear"

Every other automotive magazine/journalists  lists the CR-Z as having a Strut front and modified Twit Beam rear suspension;

Where did you get your info from mr. Saunders ????

Agreed - I saw his comment about Aluminium wishbones and thought "oh, that's good, they've managed to ditch the torsion beam" - I didn't actually question it at all!

So - can anyone confirm if it is indeed still torsion beam at the back, or if Honda did put development money in to proper rear suspension for a sports car?

From the honda news release:

"In the front, MacPherson struts contribute to the CR-Z’s spaciousness, low height and low center of gravity, while the lower arms are made of forged aluminum to reduce weight. In the rear, a compact H-shaped torsion beam suspension allows for the placement of the IPU (Intelligent Power Unit) beneath the cargo area floor. In combination, these elements offer a sporty yet highly stable steering feel."

Hello Matt - so where is the detail - oh yes on the CAR website.

Matt Saunders March 7, 2010 9:29 PM

Sorry chaps: my slip. It's the lower control arms on the CRZ's front end that are aluminium rather than steel. When a lot of car manufacturers use the phrase 'control arm', they really do mean 'wishbone'. Not here though.

The back end's an H-shape torsion beam, as suggested.

I'll get my coat...

theonlydt March 9, 2010 2:56 PM

Thanks for the clarification Matt. If it makes you feel any better some car websites are still insisting that the CRZ will come with a 1.8 petrol (140bhp) and the electric motor will give another 20bhp. Maybe those are the plans for the NA market though?

Hopes were raised by that chassis... now dashed again.

I hope that Mugen or someone else does spend time on this, because there might be a decent car to be found - but dynamics will need a lot of work.

judah777 March 10, 2010 2:06 PM

Until Honda start building cars with a proper chassis again (NSX, DC2 Integra, S2000)......all I can honestly see their cars as are being a slighty less boring Toyota....minus the "sudden/unintended" accelleration problems..

I mean seriously.....Honda must think the general car buying public to be idiots if they are really going to market a 1200 plus kilo car with around 128 bhp as a successor to the CRX.......

Would it have really been so hard to give it double-wishbones all-around, equal lenght drive shafts, a 1.6L VTEC motor and a electric motor to make 200 hp....throw in a helical LSD and their famously slick 6-spd manual......keep the weight around 1100 kg  and.......voila....a real sports hybrid.......

Does nothing that a 1.3 four cylinder Aygo would do with stop-start.
