Return of Gordini

Hilton Holloway
I’m hot-foot back from a dinner this evening in Geneva with the surprising news that Renault intends to relaunch the Gordini brand.

The badge is likely to reappear in 2010 and will be used on more upmarket, sporting versions of the Twingo, Clio and Megane Coupe.

A senior Renault source said he envisaged Gordini being roughly equivalent to Mini’s Cooper brand. The cars are also likely to cost slightly more than the Renault Sport variants of the Twingo, Clio and Megane.

According to the source, the Gordini brand came out of market research ‘extremely well in the UK and Europe’.

A somewhat surprising result, perhaps, considering Gordini is associated with Formula One of the 1950s and then with hot versions of historic Renaults such as the 8, 12 and original 5.

My guess is that Gordini brand Renaults have probably not been seen in the UK for 30 years. It will also be interesting to see how Renault separates the Renaultsport and Gordini brands – aside from the use of their respective corporate colours of yellow and French blue.

A name that means a lot to some of us here of a certain age, but as you say, t'will be interesting to see how they market it.  Do Renault "own" the brand, or are Gordini a separate entity?   I'm thinking of the relationship AMG have with Merc (as opposed to the perception some people have of that relationship).

Ahh fond memories of the R5 Gordini Turbo, have to confess never owned one, I was mid way through my apprenticeship at a Renault Service Point in Guildford at the time. It didnt matter what you were doing under the hood it was a Bas***d of car to work on !!!! Loved the futuristic wheels though!

This wouldn't be a hasty retort to Citroens DS brand would it?

Not quite sure where they think they are going to position it, especially considering the Renaultsport brand's strength.

I imagine its a hasty retort to FIAT's much mooted revival of the ABARTH brand and their subesequent treatment of that ... rather than Citroen's DS line up.  I agree with your use of the word 'hasty' because this Clio has none of the "va-va-voom" or eye catching styling mods that the ABARTH 500s or Puntos appear to have.  Apart from the fron't bumper idea nicked from the SEAT Ibiza Bocanegra concept I mentioned elsewhere on an earlier post.  Renault seem very lost.
