This week's issue of Autocar, dated 30 July 2014, is something of a BMW special.
Leading the charge is the new 2-series Active Tourer, which finds itself face to face with Volkswagen's versatile Golf SV in a compact MPV twin test. We drive both models to decide which is most worthy of your cash.
Our eight-page road test focuses on the McLaren 650S. It's the car the 12C should always have been, and delivers incredible looks, power and value for money. We've also had our first chance to test the new BMW X4 in the UK. Can this mid-size SUV – based on the smaller BMW X3 but aiming to cash in on the same market as the larger BMW X6 – find its place?
We also get to grips with Ford's Fiesta-based EcoSport in Scotland. It's the Blue Oval's third model in its SUV line-up, sitting alongside the Focus-based Ford Kuga and the upcoming Mondeo-based Edge. Ford's first model in the compact crossover segment shows promise, too.
The features section includes an epic twin test between Porsche's latest 911 Turbo S, and an F4 racing car. Steve Sutcliffe drives both to see if the best from Stuttgart can keep up with a thoroughbred racer.
Our long-term test fleet welcomes the latest BMW X5. Over the next nine months, we aim to see whether BMW's flagship SUV still has what it takes to compete with the best.
We also wave goodbye to our Vauxhall Adam, which has proved itself to be every bit the urban rival to the Mini and Fiat 500 we hoped it would be. There's also updates on our Vauxhall Ampera, MG3, Toyota GT86, Peugeot RCZ R, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Nissan Qashqai.
The subject of our used car buying guide this week is the Volvo S60 R which, though potentially costly if things go wrong, is nonetheless a more interesting choice than many German rivals.
