Toyota will start field trials on a new system of wirelessly charging electric vehicles in Japan later this month. The new technology will enable EVs fitted with a receiving coil to be charged by parking the car in line with a transmitting coil that's built into the ground.

Sales of Audi's gas-powered A3 kick off in Germany this month. The A3 Sportback g-tron, which combines two compressed natural gas tanks with a 108bhp 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine, has a range of around 240 miles. The model costs from €25,900 in Europe, and won't be coming to the UK.

Renault's financial results for 2013 show group operating profit has risen to over €1.2 billion, compared with €782 million in 2012. Much of the company's recovery is being attributed to Dacia, which was one of the fastest-growing brands in Europe last year.

MG is planning a new four-door coupé based on its MG 5 hatchback. Latest spy shots place the model testing in China, with a full reveal scheduled for the Beijing motor show in April. The new model is expected to keep the hatchback's range of 1.5-litre engines.
