Honda’s marketing men wanted their fleet-star to topple the Ford Mondeo from the pedestal it had occupied for the last decade – as well as its perilously close competition from the new Toyota Avensis and Mazda 6 – but they also had the Volkswagen Passat and even the BMW 3-series firmly in their sights, too.

Evidence? While the 2.0 Executive model, tested here, matches top-trim Mondeos and Avensis’ for price and kit, the Accord range starts significantly above where Ford, Mazda and Toyota kick-off, with no stripped-out entry-level car and no 1.8-litre engine.

But is targeting the junior execs a mission too far for Honda’s new car?
