Autocar’s spies uncover Munich’s coupe-cum-SUV in all its glory

BMW will redefine the concept of a sporty SUV when it releases its X6 next year; just as Autocar predicted, the new ‘crossover coupe’ will combine the roofline of a coupe with the higher stance and four-wheel drive of a conventional 4x4. And we’ve got the spy snaps (the first to show the car with any body cladding) to prove it.The BMW X6 will found a new class of vehicle when it goes on sale in 2008 – the SUV coupe. The car’s controversial rear hatch, which severely restricts headroom in the rear, sets the car apart from every other 4x4 on sale today. Underneath the black tape covering the C-pillar is a small window that will provide more light for the two rear seat passengers. Despite the X6’s compromised interior room for passengers and luggage, cars in this style are likely to become the next big thing. Infiniti will show the production version of the EX crossover later this month, and Audi’s Cross Coupe concept previews a small 4x4 with a sloping rear hatch that eats into boot space.BMW new X6 is set to appear at the Geneva motor show next year, and enter production at the group's American factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina, later in 2008.
