Spies snap the estate version of next year’s new A4 out in the open

These are the first pictures of the new Audi A4 Avant, estate sibling to Ingolstadt’s overhauled BMW 3-series combatant which is currently on show at Germany’s biannual motor show in Frankfurt.

The new A4 load-lugger will use the same acclaimed ‘MLP’ architecture as the current A5. Expect it to come with the same range of petrol and diesel engines as the saloon too, to be offered with Quattro four-wheel drive on all but the cheapest models, and to be priced at a slight premium over the saloon, that itself will start at £22,590.

The A4’s new, larger dimensions should allow the Avant version to offer significantly more boot space than its predecessor (1355-litres). The 1500-litres of the new Mercedes C-class Estate will be Audi’s target.

The new A4 Avant will be shown at the Geneva motor show in March 2008. Sales are likely to start in the second half of 2008.

The Audi A4 is an improvement over the previous version, but isn't good enough to topple the BMW 3 Series
