Chelsea AutoLegends has a promising future

Chas Hallett
It never ceases to amaze me how many opportunities us car nuts have to get a fix in the UK. I'm not just talking about the headline grabbing events like Goodwood, Pistonheads Sunday Services or big motorsport meetings either.

Every weekend up and down the country there's always car-related stuff to see or do: single make meetings, festivals, autojumbles, you name it. For all that there's surprisingly little going on in London. Which is one of the reasons I pitched up at the new Chelsea AutoLegends show yesterday.

See all the best pics from the Chelsea AutoLegends show

It's at the Royal Hospital (site of the flower show) which is a grand setting but despite this and the advanced publicity I was expecting a low-key event.

What I got though was something on a much grander scale. Masses of exciting road cars (more classic Ferraris and Porsches than you could shake a stick at) and race cars including Le Mans winners.

Le Mans greats of the human kind were there too, as both Richard Attwood and David Piper were featured artists. They were terrific, as was the classic Steve McQueen Le Mans film being played behind them...

The event wasn't perfect and let's face it getting to Chelsea is tricky and pricey if you don't live in the capital. But it was a shining example of why we Brits have such a great car culture.

In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up being a British version of Pebble Beach, albeit a bit more in touch with ordinary folk than the upscale  Californian event. If you are inside the the M25 I'd put it in the diary for next year...

Glad I didnt go after looking at the pictures...I was considering it. The format looks a bit loose, more like a poorer version of Auto Italia @ Brooklands.

Also I cant quite see the connection of a bunch of Rally cars,(much as I love them), with LeMans...and what was that moody replica Stratos doing there!!!

Surely one of the key defining characteristics of Pebble Beach, and what keeps it special, is its emphatic reluctance to be at all "in touch with ordinary folk"....

I think it has a future, just need to tighten up the presentation a bit

The following were my observations.

1.The le mans cars were on the pavement behind a picket fence so close that you couldnt see them should be better displayed

2.The owners cars (of which the replica stratos was one) were a bit hiddledy piggeldy with the beautiful maserati at the gates squashed in by cardboard boxes

3.The catering (hog roast, stir fry etc...Goodwood take note) was pretty imaginative although London is pretty well catered for with eating houses so not really a problem.

It looked like the organiser had laid it out with only a few people in mind, he/she missed that you need a lot more space to view the cars properly.

There is a lot of space at Chelsea really for a car show and it could have been better used, that said I really enjoyed a morning in London and back to Sussex in time for afternoon tea. I think Chelsea Autolegends is great

Miura SV... 330 P3... Those two on their own have me kicking myself for not going.

@Pistachio The organisers have just emailed to say that next year's event has been scheduled for Sunday 4 September 2011. Be good to see if they've taken note of your (excellent) observations

Superb event, given that 1) it was the first time it had been done, so was a bit of a suck-it-and-see thing, and 2) it was a charity event charging only twelve quid to get in, and obviously they had to more than cover their costs if it was going to achieve its purpose.

Chas, i think you may have damned with faint praise on some aspects.  Getting to/from and into/out of the event is MUCH easier than trying to attempt the same at Goodwood for the Festival of Speed, regardless of whether or not you live in London.  And although it is a static display event and not a hillclimb, it was a quarter of the price - which if you are talking about a family outing makes it a helluva lot cheaper.

I think the photos on the Autocar site don't really do the event justice either.  If you like modern cars, there was:

Bugatti Veyron GranSport

Ferrari 458 Italia

Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera

Alfa Romeo 8C Spider

Rolls-Royce Ghost

Bentley Continental GTC Supersport

Maserati GranCabrio

plus the whole current Porsche range [although at this sort of show it just highlighted how butt-ugly the Panamera and Cayenne are, and how unimaginative the current Boxster/Cayman/911 designs are...)

plus most of the current Aston range

Looking for something more classic?

Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa

Ferrari 275 GTB x 2

Ferrari F40 x 2

Ferrari 250 GT SWB x at least 4 or 5

Ferrari Superamerica x a few

Lamborghini Miura x 2

More 360 Modenas, 430s and Gallardos than you could poke a stick at

'63 Corvette Sting Ray

Alfa Romeo Zagato SZ

Jaguar C-Type

Jaguar D-Type

Jaguar E-Type

Lamborghini Diablos

Ferrari 288 GTO

Volvo S40 (actually, i think that was just a caterer's car...)

Ferrari 575 Zagato one-off

plenty of classic old Bentleys, Astons et al

Porsche 550

BMW 328 (no, not an E36.  The original)

Ferrari Testarossas

Ferrari 512BB

Mercedes 300 SLR

Aston Martin DB5

Aston Martin Lagonda

Rolls-Royce Phantoms (can't remember specifically which models)

Plus, the line of Le Mans cars was spectacular:

Porsche 956s, 962s, 917s and at least one 908

Aston Martin LMP1 and DBR9

Audi R8 2004

Jaguar XJR-8 1998

Bentley Speed 8 (winner, 2003)

Ferrari 330 P3/4 1967

Ferrari 512BB LM

Porsche RS Spyder

plus many more but i can't remember right now

Plus the collection of rally cars -

Peugeot 405

Lancia Stratos

Lanica 037

and more, but i'm sure you are getting the picture by now.

This wasn't just promising, it was brilliant.  For a bit over a tenner!
