Next-gen lights 'run on full beam'

New headlamps that always run on high beam will go on sale in the next three to five years.
Gentex, maker of headlamp sensors, is developing the new system, which will use shutters to stop oncoming motorists from being dazzled.
“We’re working with lamp makers who are developing complex lights with shutters driven by gearwheels to dynamically alter the way the light works,” said Gentex’s Klaus Wiebler.
The shutters selectively mask the high beam light to stop dazzle. But because the rest of the beam stays on, the driver gets full illumination of the road surrounding the oncoming car.
Gentex reckons the idea is a step up from the system just launched on Mercedes’ new E-class, which also detects oncoming traffic but dims the lights to prevent dazzling.
