It may be based on a Chevrolet, but Bertone’s striking Mantide concept could go into production for a hefty $2 million (£1.3 million).

The company's design director, Jason Castriota, has hinted that ten of the supercars could be made, saying that there has been considerable interest.

Castriota said: “There is considerable interest around the world as we have been contacted by potential clients in Asia, Europe and America."

The car is based on the Corvette ZR1 and was unveiled at the Shanghai motor show last month.

The car features wild carbonfibre bodywork that is said to reduce drag and improve downforce, and 100kgs has also been shaved from the car's weight. It also has carbonfibre interior trim, seats and wheels.

Power is provided by the ZR1’s 6.2-litre supercharged V8 engine.
