Volkswagen is set to unveil its fourth super-frugal Bluemotion model at September’s Frankfurt motor show. The Golf Bluemotion will be powered by VW's 104bhp 1.9 TDi engine, and returns 62.8mpg while producing only 119g/km of CO2. This equates to a reduction of 7.4mpg and 16g/km over the standard 1.9 TDi, not to mention free entry into the London congestion charge zone from 2008.The improvements are achieved via a number of simple modifications. The gear ratios are longer and the engine idle speed slower, while the underbody is more aerodynamic and the radiator grille is smaller.Even high-pressure tyres have been utilised to save every last gram of carbon output. No official prices have been announced yet, but we expect the Golf BlueMotion to start around £16,000 when it goes on sale in the UK next spring.
