Tata are linked with buying the Italian coachbuilders

The owners of Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina are looking to sell their 50.7 per cent stake in the company.

Pincar, the Pininfarina family company, took the decision to sell its majority stake at a board meeting last week and it has hired a bank to help it look for potential suitors.

One name already linked with the stake is Indian manufacturer Tata. Pininfarina has worked with Tata before on the Tata Prima concept car, which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.

One source close to the company claimed Pincar was not looking to leave Pininfarina completely and the sale of its majority stake was agreed as part of a debt agreement with banks at end of 2008.

Pininfarina’s latest model is the recently-unveiled Ferrari 458 Italia, while other models it has designed which are currently in production include the Alfa Romeo Brera and Spider, the Maserati Quattroporte and Granturismo and the Ferrari California, 599 GTB Fiorano and 612 Scaglietti.
