Alexander Selipanov, who was responsible for the exterior designs of the Chiron and Vision GT, has become chief designer at Genesis

Hyundai luxury brand Genesis has hired former Bugatti and Lamborghini designer Alexander Selipanov as its chief designer.

The 33-year-old was responsible for the exterior designs of the Chiron (pictured below) and Vision GT concept. Before that, he worked at Lamborghini and was part of the team that created the Huracán.

Selipanov, who is also known by the first name of Sasha, will start working at the Global Genesis Advanced Studio in Europe from January. He will report directly to Luc Donckerwolke, head of design at Genesis.

“I am sincerely excited about this opportunity, because it will be a new chapter in my career,” said the Russian. “As I have been working with well-established brands so far, Genesis is a new and refreshing challenge to me.”

The Genesis brand was launched in 2015 as a luxury marque to compete with the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. It is expected to enter the UK market by 2018 with a new SUV model.

“I am honoured to join this exciting journey, as it is a very rare chance to launch a luxury automotive brand and be part of its history,” said Selipanov. “With growing expectations and curiosity around Genesis, I cannot wait to contribute my expertise and passion to the brand.”

Genisis already produces cars for other markets, including its native South Korea and the US. The marque’s flagship model is the G90, which Autocar has driven, and it recently launched the 365bhp G80 Sport to rival hot variants of the BMW 5 Series.

See I told you., you said EXACTLY the opposite! I argued that designers must enjoy the greater freedom of doing "clean sheet" designs, and you "Totally disagreed".

This guy got got so bored at VWAG he did a cargina to keep himself amused. Eventually the boredom engendered by their slowly evolving generic design strategy got the better of him and he eagerly jumped ship to somewhere he might do something different. Good for him.

Having advance to the top of the VW automotive food chain as a designer, having done work at Lamborghini and at Bugatti on the new Chiron, perhaps he realized at least two things: 1.) Outside of derivatives of the brands ONE core model, it is a good possibility that there might not be much design work for the mark for another ten years when its time to replace the current car! Which leads to,...2.) With VW's Dieselgate and the thought that other countries maybe getting ready to follow the US's lead and take action against the company, having designers sitting around collecting a check while they're waiting around to undate/redesign the brands one vehicle, might not be a recipe for a long-term future with the brand! Jumping ship and joining other former VW/Audi Colleagues over at Hyundai's new Genesis brand, could hold a more promising future for the young designer.

Genesis may be may only just over a year old but the Hyundai Genesis has been around for some time,to be honest I don't fancy it's chances here. If Nissan & Toyota have not really had that big a breakthrough with Infiniti & Lexus then to be honest I really Hyundai doing better, after all the Sonata, XG 30 & Grandeur didn't sell that many here and I can't see a stand alone brand doing that much better

Hmmm... an ex-Lamborghini/Bugatti designer jumping car to Hyundai's Genesis? Will we get to see Genesis creating Korea's first supercar?
