Revised CR-Z hybrid coupé raises power to 135bhp with no impact on economy

An updated version of the Honda CR-Z hybrid coupé has been unveiled at the Paris motor show.

The facelifted CR-Z gets an updated version of its 1.5 SOHC i-VTEC engine, which now produces 119bhp thanks to changes to the variable valve timing system and ECU.

A further 20bhp comes from updates to the electric motor, notably moving from a nickel-metal hybrid battery to lithium ion. The revisions raise combined peak power to 135bhp and 140lb ft.

The car now accelerates from 0-62mph in 9.0sec (0.7sec less than the current model) and its top speed is now 124mph. Claimed fuel consumption is 56.5mpg with emissions unchanged at 116g/km.

Honda has also added a Plus Sport boost system. Provided the battery has more than 50 per cent charge, this mode delivers increased acceleration for up to ten seconds when the button on the steering wheel is pressed. The boost can be used in ECON, Normal or Sport modes. 

The 2013 CR-Z features new front and rear bumper designs, 17-inch alloy wheels and new door casings which improve cabin storage. Two new paint colours, Energetic Yellow and Aurora Violet, will be available for the facelifted CR-Z.

The current car claimed 0-62

The current car claimed 0-62 in 10 and Autocar managed 9, obviously trying harder than i would in my own car! So if this knocks another second (approx) off that it might be quick enough to be fun. I expect doubling the power from the electric motor will have a bigger effect in boosting the low rev torque which will have a greater benefit to most of the time because of the long gearing. I suspect this will make the car what it always should have been. 

We still need a 200bhp version though!
