Firm could put its dramatic lightweight concept into production as a track-only special, says boss

Lamborghini has suggested that its exciting Sesto Elemento concept from the recent Paris motor show could be put into production as a track-only special.

Company boss Stephan Winkelmann told Autocar that Lamborghini is increasingly likely to make several examples of Sesto Elemento. It uses Superleggera running gear but is made from a new material, called forged carbon, that helps to keep its weight down to a mere 999kg.

“We are testing the Sesto Elemento at the moment and if it all goes well then we could look at a limited production run,” said Winkelmann. “But it would not be homologated because there are complications with things like airbags. It would be for track use only.

“We do not want to ever produce and show cars just for a museum,” he added.

It’s thought that the Sesto Elemento’s price could exceed that of the one million euro (£850k) Reventon. When asked if the new car’s production run would be similar to that of the Reventon, of which 20 were manufactured, Winkelmann said, “It would be that at the maximum.”

As I understood it from the PR splurge, the Sesto was supposed to be 'the future' of Lamborghini so why limit it 20 track examples which will likely never see a track and end up in museums and collections - that they are so opposed to.

seems a shame to just release it half arsed like this when it could be developed into a great road car with a lot of development work already done.

I would hazard a guess that Lamborghini are unable to put the Sesto Elemento into full production because they cannot get the forged carbon priced down to a competitive level.

[/quote] If they could ask 1 million USD for the Reventón, they will be able to do so or even more for this. Hell, even if they loose money on these cars, it could be worth the investment to lift Lamborghini back to its deserved place. Back in the 70's, 80's it was equal to advanced design and technology with unmatched speed (the Countach is in my top 5 all time favourites), since then it lost its shine and became somewhat conservative.

And surely safety systems could be adapted from existing cars? Could they get low volume type approval just for this model? Probably not...

why not do it as one make series, jack the price up to 2mil with the race support outfit like ferrari?? then Lambo can get alot of data on the car with their clients paying for it...

I think you guys are missing the point with regards to the carbon thing. That's not the problem at all - it's making the car street-legal in a way that doesn't just turn it into a tweaked Gallardo.

As a show car and concept vehicle, it was not designed to meet crash regulations and as it's not based on an existing Lamborghini model it would involve full compliance testing costing many many dollars/euros/pounds and end up adding hundreds of kilos. Which defeats the very purpose of the car in the first place.
