The Jaguar XE and Jaguar XF both achieved five-star Euro NCAP crash test results, in the latest batch of newly tested cars.
After promising improvement after the XF achieved just four stars in its previous test, both cars got top marks, along with the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X1, Infiniti Q30, Lexus RX, Kia Optima and Sportage, Renault Megane and Talisman, and Vauxhall Astra.
NCAP recently added the requirement of an optional or standard autonomous emergency braking system to achieve a five-star rating, as well as rear restraints performing well in the newly added full-width frontal crash test. It will introduce the testing of pedestrian avoidance systems in 2016.
Of the 15 cars tested, four cars missed out on five-star ratings, with the Nissan NP300 Navara and Mini Clubman achieving four stars. The BMW Z4’s relative old age and failure to keep up with safety technologies like lane and speed assist and autonomous emergency braking meant it achieved just three stars.
The Lancia Ypsilon was given just a two-star rating, due to its failure to offer adequate protection to adult occupance, and its lack of safety assistance technologies. A damning statement by Euro NCAP accompanied the poor safety rating, with NCAP suggesting that safety-conscious buyers consider other options, and that the Ypsilon “does little to maintain the legacy of a once famous brand in Europe".
