McLaren Automotive, the road car business that Ron Dennis left F1 to develop, has two more models “in development” beyond this week’s MP4-12C, and intends eventually to have “five to 10 models and variants” to offer buyers by the time its complete model line-up is revealed.

The first of the development cars is believed to be an open version of the 12C, due a year after the fixed-roof model’s launch in 2011.

The other is an entirely new McLaren model, due “in two or three years”.

The firm is understood to be working on a smaller, more affordable sports car. Dennis says part of the company’s mission is to help re-establish high-technology manufacturing in Britain.

McLaren won planning permission last month to build a new factory adjacent to its space-age headquarters near Woking.

MD Antony Sheriff said the company has “a complete plan to produce multiple models” and is planning eventually to build around 4000 units a year.
