A tyre test conducted by Autocar has shown the serious effect that cheap tyres can have on a car’s performance and safety.

Autocar took five budget tyres made in the Far East and tested them against a tyre made by German firm Continental, on a VW Golf. In addition to the industry-standard R30 high-speed test, both wet and dry handling and braking were tested, as well as aquaplaning performance.

The results showed an alarming difference between the Nankang, GT Radial, Wanli, Triangle, Linglong and Continental tyres.

The Linglong tyre performed worst, and was still travelling at 27.8mph at the point when the Continental-equipped Golf had stopped.

The full tyre test is available in 28 January issue of Autocar.
