A temporary speed camera in Lancashire has generated £72,000 in fines in just three weeks – more than seven times the amount an average camera makes in the same period. The camera, on the A56, has been installed to enforce a temporary 50mph speed limit during a 16-week programme of roadworks, but its positioning has attracted criticism from locals, including Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans.“They really are raking the cash in on this camera,” Evans said, “I think for those motorists doing under 70mph a warning letter would have sufficed. Why did they not put an electronic warning sign in place to slow the traffic down rather than a camera that is hitting the already hard-pressed motorist further?”

Re: Britain’s greediest speed camera?

Whilst I dispute the 'safety' benefits of 90% of speed cameras there is no excuse for getting 'caught' when one is signposted. It does not mark you out as an oppressed motorist but simply an idiot who cannot understand how numbers on a signpost should equate with those on their speedo.

Now unmarked vans and and horseboxes in north wales on long, clear straight A-Roads with reduced speeds limits......well that seems awfully like state endorsed entrapment!

Surely that speed camera was infact helping the hard hit motorist? A temporary imposed speed limit of 50 mph would save him/her fuel. However for the motorist who doesn't pay attention to the speed limit - obviously it doesn't hit them hard enough if there's that many people being caught.

Re: Britain’s greediest speed camera?

The only ones at fault here are the 1200 people ignoring the road signs. I live near this camera site. The roadworks are on a fast, blind corner leading downhill. The 50 mph is *very* well posted.

It tends to get congested at peak times anyway so some idiot coming over the top at 70-80+ could easily find themselves slamming into the back of traffic queuing through the roadworks. I think this is one instance where the name "safety camera" is justified.
