Peugeot Citroen has to recall 90,000 107s and C1s following Toyota throttle recall

Peugeot Citroen is recalling about 90,000 cars amid concerns they have faulty accelerator pedals.

The move follows affects the Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1, sister cars of the Toyota Aygo, which is affected by a sticking throttle problem that has sparked a global recall of several Toyota models.

However, only 36 Citroen C1s are affected in the UK, as the problem is specific to the niche selling petrol models fitted with ESP. Concerned Citroen owners should contact 0844 4633500.

In total, Toyota is recalling more than four million cars with the problem.

Estimates suggest that, in the US, the sudden acceleration of Toyota vehicles has been linked to 19 deaths in the past decade.

Peugeot Citroen has reported it is not aware of any injuries caused by the problem in the vehicles it is recalling, which were all made from 2005 to mid-2009.

The Citroën C1 is the cheapest of the C1-107-Aygo triplets. The city car is cute, but noisy and basic

Assuming few, or no accidents have so far resulted with throttle sticking incidents with these cars, then one has to ask whether a recall is really necessary. Just getting the 90,000 cars back to the dealer alone represents quite a risk - that's over half a million miles of driving, if the average car is based three miles from a dealership. It's not unreasonable to expect one bad accident from this alone. (Plus the CO2 damage to the planet through all those additional journeys...) And then any repair work needs to be of a very high standard so as not to cause more problems than it solves. I wouldn't mind betting that there are more sticking throttles after the "fix" given the typical standard of repair work in these franchises!
