Colin McRae has been voted as the all-time greatest motorsport hero in a Motorsport News poll.
McRae topped the list in a poll run by Autocar’s sister magazine, Motorsport News, to find its readers' top 100 motorsport heroes. The popular Scot finished ahead of Ayrton Senna and Jim Clark.
McRae’s father, Jim, himself a rally legend, said he was honoured his son had topped the poll.
“I don’t think he realised how many followers he had. Colin was very respected and had big support,” he said. “It really is great news and takes your breath away when you realise the names who were behind him in the poll.”
McRae was WRC champion in 1995 for Subaru and also competed for Ford, Citroen and Skoda works teams. He won 25 world rallies before being killed in a helicopter accident in 2007.
Current Formula One world champion Jenson Button finished 43rd, while Lewis Hamilton was 25th.
In a similar poll run by Motorsport News 10 years ago, McRae finished fourth behind Senna, Clark and Nigel Mansell.

Re: McRae voted number one hero
While I don't want to take anything away from McCrae and his family, (especially as this must be a heart-warming award for them), but I'm sure if this poll was taken in Brazil, the results would be different. Likewise France, Italy etc.
Re: McRae voted number one hero
Youtube will only show me video of Colin , and I have watched him on the TV for years . BUT I HAVE NEVER ACTUALLY SEEN HIM the way I have seen Graham Hill , Jimmy McCrae , Stirling Moss ,etc , a few feet away from me.
