Cadillac reinvents its SRX for European customers

This is the new Cadillac SRX, a ground-up rethink of the model that’s been designed to succeed in Europe.

The original Cadillac SRX missed the mark, GM officials admit. The all-new Cadillac SRX is more SUV-like yet also more elegant, in keeping with Cadillac’s position as a ‘high-line luxury brand’, and it has a much better interior.

Although the original Cadillac SRX was a niche player in the SUV market, GM luxury boss Mark McNabb has already said the goal with the new car is to tackle high-volume players, notably the Lexus RX.

Like the original Cadillac SRX, the new model shares its architecture with the Cadillac CTS saloon. It’s based on a modified version of GM’s latest Theta platform, which will also be used by Saab’s 9-4X, due later this year. It’s 100mm shorter than the model it replaces, but 25mm wider.

Inside, there are five seats, not seven, but that does allow for plenty of leg room in the rear seats. The SRX also has a large multi-level cargo bay.

In American trim the SRX will be powered by a 3.0-litre direct-injection V6 petrol engine. It’s a smaller unit than the outgoing model’s, but it delivers more power and an estimated 15 per cent better fuel economy. A 2.8-litre V6, producing 295bhp, will also be offered.

Crucially, a diesel engine will be in the line-up too when the car goes on sale in the UK later this year. The SRX will deliver an array of advanced technology, including a smart suspension system and numerous safety devices such as a rear-view camera and parking assist.

Cadillac has left out active cruise control and collision mitigation, technologies that several of its key rivals plan to offer. The firm could add such features within the next few years.

The Cadillac SRX is one of the most broadly talented models the marque currently makes. It appeals only the minority, however
