Vauxhall has denied British media reports claiming that production of the Ampera would not be coming to the UK.

The Vauxhall Ampera is the European version of the Chevrolet Volt, which is due to arrive in 2011. The reports claimed production of the Ampera would take place in the US alongside the Volt as there wasn’t going to be sufficient enough demand to warrant an investment the UK.

It also claimed Ampera production would shift to Europe in 2015 or 2016, when the second-generation model is scheduled to arrive.

“There has categorically been no decision on where European production of the Ampera will take place,” a Vauxhall source told Autocar.

"But in order to justify production at any European plant there will need to be sufficient demand and this, rather than the launch of the second-gen model, will drive the decision on timing.

“Obviously we would like to see it built at Ellesmere Port as the Ampera is underpinned by the new Astra. It would make sense.”

The source also said no decision was expected on the choice of European plant for Ampera production anytime soon.

“We don’t know when a decision will be made, but we’ve had no indications yet about when we’ll find out.”
