Opel/Vauxhall bidder sees big boost

BAIC, the Chinese manufacturer bidding for Opel/Vauxhall, has boosted its first-half 2009 profits in its home market by 78 per cent.

Helped by joint ventures with Hyundai and Daimler, and the Chinese scrappage incentive scheme, BAIC enjoyed a growth of 28 per cent in its year-on-year first-half sales.

The best-selling car in China was the Hyundai Elantra Yuedong. Sales in BAIC’s joint venture with Hyundai rose 56 per cent to 257,003 units.

China is also expected to be a good market for GM in 2009; year-on-year sales are expected to increase by more than 20 per cent, according to GM China chief Kevin Wale.
