The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) acts as the voice of the UK motor industry, supporting and promoting its position to government, stakeholders and the media at home and abroad. We are delighted to support this new initiative by Autocar. 814,000 people are now employed in the automotive industry in Britain and with record exports and productivity it is an exciting time to join the industry. There are at least 5,000 skilled vacancies in automotive manufacturing, underlining a critical need to attract more talent. We hope this event will help inspire young women considering their career prospects.

Jaguar Land Rover
Jaguar Land Rover, the UK’s largest automotive manufacturer, was voted the best employer in Britain in a Bloomberg survey of workers in the country’s 400 biggest companies. Recruiting more women is a priority: it’s essential that we attract the best talent to develop the products and technologies that excite and delight our customers. Our own Orla Murphy was the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s Young Woman Engineer of the Year 2015 and we work with the Institute to promote engineering careers and inspire girls. Since 2013 we have promoted engineering to more than 900,000 young people. Our Jaguar Land Rover Learning Academy provides opportunities for our employees to develop their skills from recruitment through to retirement.
Julia Muir founded Gaia Innovation to address the critical skills shortage in UK automotive retailing, by building bridges between automotive employers and education. Gaia Innovation are contracted by automotive employers to implement effective Reach Out Campaigns to attract talented people into the automotive industry, with a particular focus on appealing to young women. The Gaia Innovation team inform young people, parents and teachers about the skills and talents we will need for the future, specifically Intelligent Mobility. The Gaia Innovation philosophy is to Inspire - through thought provoking speeches, Inform - through career speed networking events, Improve - the young person’s employability skills through training and coaching, and Investigate - the young person’s true talents through work experience and internships. Julia Muir is also the founder of the UK Automotive 30% club, a group of progressive CEOs and MDs from the manufacturers, retailers and supplier organisations, who are working towards the aspirational aim of filling 30% of key leadership positions in their organisations with women by 2030 in a “30 by 30” strategy.
