Italian car designer and coachbuilder Pininfarina has agreed a contract with train company Eurostar to redesign and refurbish its fleet of cross-channel trains.

The contract is good news for the Italian coachbuilder, which has been battling against heavy losses, and the death of its chairman and CEO Andrea Pininfarina last summer

The Eurostar rail service began operating 15 years ago, and the Pininfarina contract, which is being overseen by the French train operator SNCF, will instigate the first major overhaul of the company’s rolling stock.

The first trains to be refurbished will go into service in 2012.
