Autocar survey: diesel sales set to slump due to pollution fears
Buyers are turning away from diesel because they believe it’s a dirty fuel, pumping the most CO2 and NOx into the atmosphere. Maybe that was true once, but the reality of modern Euro 6-compliant diesels is different.
The trouble is, that doesn’t matter, because the Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal has eroded belief in the figures that prove modern diesel engines aren’t as polluting as the headlines are suggesting. And now that perception has taken hold, it’s hard to see how public trust in diesel-powered cars will be restored.
There is one interesting side-effect: our survey shows people are switching from diesel to hybrids. Could we ultimately reflect on VW Dieselgate as the tipping point for EV take-up?

To say that Euro 6 engines are not certified to be running in the US is to say the least: lame. Sure, engines certified for Euro 6 regulations are only applicable in the EU. Why voting for Brexit should be applicable and extended to Switzerland?? Engines, diesel or not, to be running in the US need to comply with rules set by EPA and CARB! Yes, it is stupid to run a 6 cylinder diesel engine to commute into London, same as it is stupid to run for that matter, in a Prius. Take the tube, the Bus, the train, go by bycicle, walk, take a London taxi... be smart and use your brain wisely. I would like to use an hybrid car, but they seem to be mated to CVT gearboxes and void of towing capacity, no matter if no-frills cheap Toyota or not-affordable Lexus.
I am keeping V8 diesel Mercedes-Benz S for Oxford-Nuneaton commute, no hybrids thank you indeed.
