Beefed-up version of Hyundai's supermini will go on sale in the UK next month as part of the MY16 i20 range

The Hyundai i20 Active, a beefed up version of the Hyundai i20 supermini, will go on sale in the UK in March, with prices starting from £15,225.

The i20 Active will become a rival for Volkswagen's CrossPolo when it goes on sale. Its dimensions make it slightly shorter and wider than the conventional five-door hatchback, although its ride height has been raised by 20mm. The Active shares its platform and wheelbase with the regular i20.

The new model also receives skid plates at the front and rear, and cladding across its wheel arches to give a pseudo-SUV appearance.

It’s likely that Hyundai’s engineers have been tweaking the i20 Active’s chassis settings for European roads.

The i20 Active will come with only one engine option at launch - Hyundai's new 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol, which produces 99bhp. The engine is claimed to return up to 58.9mpg with CO2 emissions of 110g/km.

Hyundai continues to ‘evaluate’ the small SUV market, although it does have a Chinese-built model, the ix25, that could feasibly be fast-tracked to European markets with only modest regional modifications.

Corsa size

Just realised the Corsa is about 6 inches smaller than the Vitara so maybe the Vitara is up a segment, but by reading between the lines this i20 could steal a few sales.

OR with a more genuine SUV appearance

Love to see a shoot out between this and the £13,999 1.6 Suzuki Vitara. Both cars have their merits and are more than capable of stealing plenty of sales from the 2 big sellers Fiesta and Corsa.
