New York motor show 2012: full A-Z guide

10) Jaguar F-Type

Following much speculation, Jaguar revealed its new sports car will be called the F-type. Previewed as the CX-16 concept at last year’s Frankfurt show, the new car will enter production next year in convertible form. We’ll see the production version F-type later this year.

11) Kia Optima custom special

Kia showcased a customised version of its Optima Hybrid courtesy of West Coast Customs. Its basketball-themed modifications include a pop-up hoop, hardwood flooring and an eye-catching orange and black paintjob.

12) Land Rover Defender DC100 Expedition concept

There have been a few versions now of Land Rover’s DC100 concept, which previews the design direction of the next-generation Defender. The DC100 Expedition concept on show at New York is the most extreme yet, aimed to emulate the current Defender’s “abusability.”

13) Land Rover Discovery 4 HSE Special Edition

Described by Land Rover as “the most luxurious specification yet offered on the Discovery 4”, the special edition 4x4 is available in black with silver detailing only. Various entertainment goodies are fitted, together with luxurious interior trim.

14) Lexus ES

Pitched as a lower-priced rival to the likes of the Mercedes E-Class, the Lexus ES will be sold in all major markets across the world. A hybrid version is also available.

15) Lexus RX 350 F Sport

Already on sale in Europe, the hybrid version of Lexus’s SUV was unveiled in front of North American audiences for the first time. The F Sport features sports suspension and bespoke front styling.

16) Lincoln MKZ

Virtually unchanged from the MKZ Concept unveiled at January’s Detroit show, the 2013 MKZ saloon represents the future of the Lincoln brand according to the company bosses.

17) Mazda Takeri

Following its appearances in Tokyo and Geneva, Mazda brought its Takeri saloon concept to the New York show. Much of the concept’s styling is expected to be carried over to the next generation Mazda 6, due next year.

18) Mercedes GL

The luxury seven-seat off-roader, seen for the first time at New York, has grown in size but weighs 100kg less than the outgoing model. Mercedes promises that the GL will offer ‘S-Class levels’ of comfort.

19) Mercedes GLK

The BMW X3 and Land Rover Freelander rival has undergone some styling tweaks, but remains available in left-hand drive guise only. The UK will have to wait for the second-generation model, currently under development and due in 2015.

20) Mercedes SL65 AMG

The new SL range-topper was shown for the first time at New York. Weight-saving measures - including an aluminium body shell - have shaved 170kg from its predecessor’s kerb weight, while engine tweaks have boosted power by 18bhp.

21) Mini GP II

The hottest Mini so far will be launched in May. Power is courtesy of a tuned version of the 1.6-litre turbo unit found in the Cooper S. A 220bhp figure is expected.

22) Nissan Altima

The Nissan Altima saloon is North America’s second-biggest selling car. The new version comes with an extensive equipment list, including ‘zero-gravity’ seats, which are said to reduce spinal loads and improve blood flow around the body.

23) Nissan New York Taxi

Replacing the iconic Ford Crown Victoria, Nissan’s ‘Taxi of Tomorrow’ is earmarked to replace New York’s entire taxi fleet by 2018. Based on the NV200 van, the vehicle features a flat floor and transparent roof.

24) Nissan Pathfinder
