Green Golf comes at a £785 premium over standard car

Volkswagen's Golf Bluemotion will cost from £17,325.

That means the Golf, which is capable of 74.3mpg on average and which has emissions of 99g/km of CO2, is £785 more than the standard 106bhp 1.6 TDI Golf on which it is based.

However, Volkswagen says a driver covering 10,000 miles a year will save over £120 a year in fuel costs alone.

The VW Golf Bluemotion is powered by the standard Golf's 106bhp 1.6-litre common-rail diesel engine, but has stop-start, regenerative braking, longer gear ratios and low-friction tyres.

It also has a styling kit to help cut drag and improve aerodynamics. This includes sports bumpers, sideskirts, a bigger rear roof spoiler and 15-inch alloys.

Weight-saving measures have also been employed to boost efficiency, with the spare tyre replaced by a tyre repair kit.

This means that the driver would have to keep the car 6/1/2 years before they started seeing a return and this is probably based on "ideal" conditions.

Do factor in the saving of £35 a year on road-tax and for some people, importantly, it will retain some of that value come resale time. For someone doing 20,000 a year it'll pay back in less than 3 years (including tax)

Damn shame the government don't do a company car tax break for cars under 100g/km CO2

It's 13% if I choose the standard model or Bluemotion, but I'd actually pay more tax as it's more expensive to buy..

Anyone just thought of using low friction tyres and taking out the spare wheel of the normal golf. save yourself £785 and also increase your MPG.

Good idea, but you'd also have to do a DIY job on altering the gearbox ratios, messing around with the ECU, installing stop-start and gaffer taping aload of plastic cladding underneath;)

I've got a Golf Bluemotion on demo all week, and the economy is very impressive indeed. I'm absolutely not trying to drive like a vicar, and i'm getting an average of 62 mpg on the computer, that's mixed motorway and cross-country A and B roads. Not so impressed with the gloomy interior. And VeeDub's boasts of class-leading refinement seem a bit far-fetched. It's quieter than a Focus (although my dad's John Deere thing is quieter than a Focus), but it's nothing special in it's class. Still plenty of wind-whoosh, and the sound of road noise in your ear, coming from the hatchback floor area.

Had a Volvo C30 stop/start on demo the week before, and that was impressive too. I averaged 65 mpg and like with the Golf, I wasn't driving like an old geezer. Much classier interior than the Golf. Also, the Volvo motor is very tractable, and will potter along round town in 4th no problem. The Golf started shaking itself and slowing down when I tried the same thing, which meant more gearchanges. Also, despite it being a new common rail motor, the Golf unit had the same characteristics as the old pumpe-duse TDi, i.e. narrow power band and overly revvy.

What really impresses me with both these cars though is that (apart from the bin-liner colour of the Golf interior), neither felt like an economy car, and neither felt remotely slow.

Is the resale supposed to be any better than "standard" Golf? Also factor in the costs of new low rolling resistance tyres (which are more expensive) and the figures still mean that in real terms, even if you are doing 20k miles a year, there is very little if any cost saving unless you are running the car for mega mileage or for a long time.

I believe it is just an excuse for VW to charge more for one of its models whilst pedalling it under the green banner!

And there was I time I was doing 40,000 a year. Am surprised VW quoted on only 10,000miles.

No point getting this Bluemotion golf, Just been to durham today from Harrogate up the A1 126 miles in total put the cruise control on 70mph the average I got back from the computer was 70mpg.

Amazing mpg just eats up the motorway miles !

I have a 1.6 tdi but it looks like a GT spec ( big wheels, lower suspension, extra kit) if you are going to ask why i went for the 1.6 TDI Se OVER GT model it was the insurance !!

So rather then having a car that shouts out eco you can have a slick looking golf that does 70mpg and add lots of cool options. Its a no brainer, hate the name bluemotion as well !

No it does not, what model did you drive an S ?, if you did thats the rubbish version

Try the SE, GT GT, GTD models with options added then the interior is more classy then a ikea made floating dash. Volvo are for old men !

I still do around 20-25K a year so it would make sense to me. That and the fact that at the moment it is alot cheaper to lease a Bluemotion model. The Bluemotion looks a little better than the standard SE to my eyes as well because the suspension has been dropped by 15mm.

My only worry is the tyres. Not their extra cost but the extended stopping distances on these 'eco' tyres.
