The Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive has set a new Nurburgring lap record for an electric car, beating the time that the electric Audi R8 e-tron set last year.
The SLS clocked a time of 7m 56.234sec around the 12.16-mile track, becoming the first production electric car to lap it in under eight minutes. The Audi R8 e-tron’s record, set last July, was 8m 9.099sec.
The 2110kg SLS has four individual synchronous electric motors, each developing 185bhp and 184lb ft of torque for an overall 740bhp and 737 lb ft of torque.
It costs around £300,000 plus taxes, and the Mercedes will only be offered in left-hand drive.

I simply adore electric vehicles!!
And when they are even faster than some ordinary race cars, what's the point in gas and diesel? Let's turn every vehicle on the planet into an electric one? That would be great!

AMG pummels R8
That's the point for me. 15 seconds faster around the Nurburgring and half the price of the electric R8.
In a straight line Audi R8 may have stood a chance against the Merc, but Nurburgring has corners.
