Fire concerns prompt worldwide recall

Honda has announced it is recalling 172,000 Jazz models in Britain after a fire broke out in one of the superminis in South Africa last year, killing a child.

All the Honda Jazz models recalled will have the master power window switch examined. Owners of the relevant cars will be contacted by Honda.

Toyota announced UK recall

Honda says that if it is exposed to large amounts of water, for example if the window is left open frequently or for long periods in heavy rain, the switch can malfunction, potentially causing a fire.

Although there have been no reported cases of this happening in the UK, all recalled cars will be fitted with a waterproof skirt to prevent water entering the unit.

Globally, 646,000 Honda Jazz models are affected.

Japanese manufacturers are getting bad press just now will this dent there image forever? if a person is killed by malfunction on the manufacturers behalf are they liable for charges does anyone know?

WHYYYYY isn't this getting the coverage of the Toyota recall? As far as I'm aware, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there has been a fatality as a result of the sticking Toyota accelerators. This, in comparison - a FIRE, is surely much worse????

But i bet those 20 would have died anyway of another accident as they don't know how to drive a car.

When i was a kid i remember more than once being in my dads camper van and the engine getting stuck on full throttle screaming away, but we just stopped and he would get out and realign the accelerator. No harm done. Get back in and drive. Its not dangerous if you know how to stop power from the engine going to the wheels (which is knowing how to drive).

The rain caused a short-circuit, then a fire. The toddler had been left alone in the car. 600,000 cars affected and Honda moving quickly. Toyota *may* have known about the sticking accelerator issue for longer, at least 19 people have been killed in N.America and it's from people just driving their cars. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't leave my car door open in heavy rain (or the window open so the rain comes in). In my opinion the Toyota recall is for a fault far more dangerous and likely to happen than the Jazz

Maybe. I presume that the American cars might have been automatic transmissions, so if the throttle suddenly stayed open they'd have to bang it out of 'drive' as no clutch to depress to wack it into neutral which is 2nd nature, but if a throttle sticks open in an auto it's gonna confuse you for a few seconds, which is long enough to stack it into the back of a lorry.

I was thinking in Europe but still, 20 fatalities in the US is a sad state of affairs. Still, it's weird... there are now rumours flying around that the Toyota recall affects mainly automatic models... strange. Apparently the remedy is going to be sticking some precision-cut metal behind the accelerator somewhere to stop the friction that was apparently causing the sticking. All sounds weird to me, maybe it'll become clearer soon.

I know your a Toyota fan and like to defend them, but in fairness, there is a pretty huge difference I would imagine between your dads old camper van on full throttle and a V8 Lexus shooting off into the distance.

I don't think its fair at all to incinuate that the deceased drivers of these vehicles were stupid. Bearing in mind Americans usually have far bigger engines, (big V8's and V6's) How long do you realistically thing it would take to end up in the back of the car/truck in front of you? Or swerve to avoid the vehicle in front of you causing an accident. It would take you a couple of seconds to realise what the hell is going on.

Or perhaps if you were using cruise control? Only to cancel the cruise control and try to brake to find out the brakes are jammed and the car is still accelerating. Only to hit whatever is in front of you - Vehicles, other pedestrians etc etc.

+Its pretty Niave to think that everyone who has this accelerator problem is on a long straight empty road with plenty of time to think over and debate your decisions. I bet for many of them in their last moments it was sheer panic wondering what the hell was going on.....

I only hope Toyota solve this problem soon to prevent any more needless deaths or casualties.

I'm not a toyota fan, but it seems you are a hater. I own a VW and i like it.

The dead people should have selected neutral on the automatic, or turned off the engine and pressed the brakes.

And the experiences i have been in when the vehicle acclerator has stuck on were on small twisty country lanes, not straight roads.

Panic is an aid to the senses it can help you react quicker, people who panic and do nothing is because they dont have any idea on what they can do instinctively.
