Inspired by the Mazda MX-5 GT racer, the GT concept is powered by a highly-tuned, naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine

Mazda will reveal the Mazda MX-5 GT concept - a potent 205bhp road-legal MX-5 - at this week’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Inspired by the Mazda MX-5 GT racer, the GT concept is powered by a highly-tuned, naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine. Drive is sent to the road via a standard six-speed manual gearbox.

Features of the hot MX-5 include adjustable coilover suspension, carbonfibre front and rear splitters and a rear boot spoiler. The firm has also added a centrally mounted sports exhaust to improve air flow and to enhance the four-pot’s engine note.

Inside the concept’s cabin, the GT gets lightweight Recaro sports seats as well as extensive use of carbonfibre around the GT’s instrumentation.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed will be used by Mazda to gauge public reaction to the 205bhp concept. To showcase the concept’s performance potential, the GT will be driven up the legendary hill circuit.

Mazda’s most recent hot MX-5 – the 244bhp supercharged Mazda MX-5 Yusho concept – was shown at the Leipzig motor show at the beginning of June. According to the marque, it was capable of 155mph. It remains a concept car only.

The Mazda MX-5 is still great fun, and more grown up in its third generation. For pure driving fun, little gets close

Should

mazda should bring back the original miata idea with a larger engine and smaller car(lotus elite philosophy)...mk.1 sized 2,000cc one ton car that put out 220bhp yet be economical from its simplicity and light weight.

seems with the new cars which got bigger and bigger it strayed further away from the very reason why the miata was fun...

MX5??

A step to far, not in the true ethos,to much power,it's about driving not how fast it goes.

Age of the car and fashion aside, I think it's a long overdue hike in power to keep the car relevant in a expanding market.

Although the cars getting on a bit, it's still one of the top dogs and only lost out to the Toyobaru because of the power..this could be just what is needed to re-invigorate the car until the new one arrives.

Can't wait to drive it...if they make it.
