Tesla plans 'electric 5-series'

Electric sports car manufacturer Tesla is aiming for BMW next - it wants to add a saloon to its range by the end of the decade.

Tesla's Lotus-based roadster will go on sale in the United States next summer - and it should be a real hit, according to our first impressions. But plans are already well advanced at Tesla's Californian headquarters for the next model in its line-up - and a push towards European markets.

Tesla vice-president Mike Harrigan told Autocar "It'll be a 5-series-sized car with the electric motor and batteries up front and rear-wheel drive. That'll be our first global car, taking us into the UK, western Europe and possibly Asian markets."

Harrigan hopes to produce between 10,000 and 20,000 saloons each year. There should be two models in the range - a £30,000 entry-level car and a £40,000 luxury version with more powerful batteries that will allow it a 300-mile range between charges.
